Make Your Own Coffee Pods
There is no question that coffee pods can be somewhat expensive. Most range in the neighborhood of $30 for a pack of 18. That’s about $1.60 per coffee pod. That’s an expensive cup of coffee to make at home. While many people enjoy the luxury of the single serving, if you find yourself using more single serving coffee pods than you are making whole pots of coffee it may interest you to learn how to make your own coffee pods.
It doesn’t take much time and it’s really really simple. The best part about doing it yourself is that you not only save yourself some money when you need it but you can use your favorite coffee and not have to limit yourself with the small range of variety the manufacturer offers.
The process is simple but you might want to make several at a time because it can become too much effort to do these as needed. Just have some kind of air tight container in which to store them so that they don’t go stale.
Find a small measuring cup or scoop that fits into your machine’s pod holder (as an example, a one third cup measure doubles perfectly for Senseo coffee pods). Place the scoop in the pod holder and then find a plastic or metal drinking cup, glass is not recommended, and fit that inside the scoop. You want both to fit as snugly as possible so that you can get a tight seal for your coffee machine pods.
For the next step you will need some 4-cup coffee filters. You want the cup style, not the cone style. Remove your plastic cup and insert the filter into the scoop. Press the plastic cup into the filter to get the shape of the coffee pod filter correct. Make a crease in the filter by folding the excess material down the side of the scoop. You want to get a good crease on the filter so that you know how much coffee it will take to fill it.
For Your Coffee Pod
Remember, one cup coffee pods are made with the perfect scoop in mind. You don’t want to settle for anything less than a perfect scoop. While too strong a brew can be fixed by adding water, you can’t fix a weak coffee without brewing more.
If you want to get a good crease, remove the cup and flip the scoop with the filter still in it. Then twist the filter on the countertop or where you are preparing your coffee maker pods. Flip it back over once you are satisfied with your crease and now you are ready to fill it with coffee.
Carefully pour your favorite coffee into the new filter up to the edge of the crease you just made. It’s okay to pour a bit more because you will then take your plastic cup and tamp the coffee down into the filter to get it tightly packed. Once the coffee is tamped as much as it can be carefully fold the edges of the filter over to seal in the coffee. Take your plastic cup and twist it down on the top of the coffee pod to get a tight seal.
That’s it. Now you have your very own gourmet coffee pods filled with your favorite coffee, ready to go. It may not be the prettiest thing you’ve ever seen but it will work. Plus, knowing that it takes less than five minutes to make your own coffee pods you should be able to get plenty done in half an hour or more, whatever your time permits.
Do it. Enjoy. And let me know about your success.
